Why Coach Dan Green?

Dan Green one of the most successful running coaches in the United States. In 33 years as head Cross Country and Track Coach at The Woodlands High School, Green's teams won 16 Texas State Championships.  Individual athletes from these teams include one Nike Cross Nationals champion and twelve competitors in the Footlocker National Championships.  He was twice named National High School Cross Country Coach of the Year, and was named to the Cross Country Hall of Fame.  He has led two US Nationals Teams to international championship events; Dan coached the Mens Junior World Cross Country team in Fujioka, Japan (2006) and he coached the Mens Senior World Cross Country team in Bydgoszcz, Poland (2010).

Coach Green's success flows from "old school" training: Commitment, hard work and sacrifice.  His success with all types of athletes has made him one of the most successful coaches in the nation.  His approach to coaching, rewarding motivated athletes willing to work hard to improve, is strongly influenced by Dr. Joe Vigil's methodology of training American Olympians.  TGR is fortunate to have Coach Vigil available in an advisory role.

Dan Green grew up in Pearland, Texas, just south of Houston, and graduated from Pearland High School.  He attended The University of Houston, and lettered in Track and Cross Country in addition to earning a Bachelor's Degree in Math & Physical Education and a MED.  Green taught and coached at Pearland High School and Clear Lake High School early in his career.  His competitive running career continued with a win at the first Houston Marathon in 1972, for which he was inducted in the Houston Marathon Hall of Fame in 2018.

Coach Green is a USA Track and Field Level II certified coach in Sprinting and Hurdle events and has a Level V IAAF certification in Endurance events, the highest certification offered by the world governing body.  Green has been selected as head coach of two US National teams competing in international championships by USATF and is a certified  Level I instructor for USATF.
